
The United Football League (UFL) announced on Wednesday that D.C. Defenders offensive coordinator Fred Kaiss was named the Assistant Coach of the Year.
Fred Kaiss is 66 years old and from Baltimore, Maryland. This year, the Defenders averaged 246.3 passing yards per game, 98.9 rushing yards per game, 252.1 receiving yards per game, and 345.2 yards per game. D.C. ranked first in total offense and set the league record in passing yards per game.
Quarterback Jordan Ta’amu ranked second in the league for passing yards (2,153), and first in touchdowns (17). Wide receiver Chris Rowland finished second in receiving yards (522) and was named to the All-UFL Team. He has been the offensive coordinator since 2023 which includes leading them to the XFL Championship Game.
Kaiss began his coaching career as a head coach for Southwestern High School in Baltimore from 1990-91. He would be the offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, and wide receivers coach at Morgan State in 1992.
Kaiss would also spend time at Southern, where he helped them win two SWAC Championships in 1993 and 1995, Tennessee State, Alabama A&M, Hampton, Alabama State, and Alcorn State.
