
The NASCAR Cup Series visited Charlotte Motor Speedway for the annual Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Chase Briscoe started the race on the pole with Kyle Larson, who competed in the Indy 500 earlier in the day, started in second.
Kyle Larson did not have a good night. He was involved in two separate crashes on lap 42 and lap 247 when Daniel Suarez hit Larson and Justin Haley. Larson ended up finishing in 37th place. His teammate, Alex Bowman, was involved in a crash on 99 slamming into the wall at Turn 4 and finished in 29th place.
The other notable drivers who did not have a good night were Bubba Wallace, Ryan Blaney, Zane Smith, and Jimmie Johnson were all involved in crashes. Carson Hocevar’s engine blew up and finished in 34th place, and Josh Bilicki had fuel pressure issues and finished in 33rd place.
William Byron dominated the majority of the race leading 283 laps and winning all three stages. Late in the race, Byron was leading with six laps to go with Denny Hamlin in front of him slowed his car down, and allowed Ross Chastain to catch him and pass him for the lead.
Chastain led the final six laps to give Trackhouse Racing its first win of the season by .673 seconds. It was Chastain’s sixth career Cup Series win and his first win at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Chastain’s teammate, Shane Van Gisbergen, had his second-best finish of the season finishing in 14th place.
The rest of the top ten finishers were Chase Briscoe third, A.J. Allmendinger fourth, Brad Keselowski fifth, Chase Elliott sixth, Michael McDowell seventh, Christopher Bell eighth, Ryan Preece ninth, and Noah Gragson tenth. Denny Hamlin, who led 53 laps, finished in 16th place after pitting for fuel. There were eight cautions for 52 laps and 34 lead changes among 11 drivers.
