The NTT IndyCar Series held qualifying on Saturday and Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to set the field for next Sunday’s running of the 109th Indianapolis 500.
The big stories heading into Sunday’s qualifying were Scott McLaughlin’s car crashed during practice, and Josef Newgarden and Will Power’s cars were unable to qualify after failing pre-qualifying technical inspection. They used the times and speeds from day one qualifying on Saturday. Rinus VeeKay bumped Jacob Abel out of the Indy 500 to take the final spot.
Robert Shwartzman, a rookie for Prema Racing, won the pole with a lap time of 2:34.6459 at 232.790 mph. He is the first rookie since Teo Fabi in 1983 to win the Indy 500 pole. Joining him on the front row are Takuma Sato and Pato O’Ward.
The 109th Indianapolis 500 gets underway next Sunday at 11 am on Fox. Purchase tickets for all IndyCar races today at StubHub.
