Ottawa Redblacks release DB Clay Fields III, place two players on the retired list

The Ottawa Redblacks released defensive back Clay Fields III and placed offensive lineman Dontae Bull and defensive lineman Christian Albright on the retired list on Friday.

Clay Fields III is five foot ten and weighs 211 pounds. The 25-year-old from Franklin, New Jersey, re-signed with the Ottawa Redblacks on November 25, 2024.

The Indianapolis Colts signed Fields III as an undrafted free agent on June 6, 2024. He played two preseason games making two tackles (2 solos).

The Colts released him on August 25, 2024. The Ottawa Redblacks signed Fields III on September 18, 2024, and spent several weeks on the practice squad. The Redblacks released him on October 18, 2024.

Collegiately, Fields III played five seasons at Marist College (2018-22) making 169 tackles (75 solos, 94 assists), five tackles for loss, half a sack, seven interceptions for 166 yards, one touchdown, 20 pass breakups, one fumble recovery, 11 kick returns for 176 yards, 20 punt returns for 191 yards, and one touchdown in 32 games for the Red Foxes. He was named a two-time First Team All-PLL (2021-22) and Third Team FCS All-American in 2021.

Then Fields III transferred to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2023 making 49 tackles (36 solos, 13 assists), two tackles for loss, one interception, nine pass breakups, and one quarterback hit in 12 games for the Mocs.

Dontae Bull is six foot seven and weighs 335 pounds. The 25-year-old from Victoria, British Columbia, played seven games for the Redblacks in 2024. In 2024, Ottawa’s offense averaged 366.9 net yards per game, 24.6 points per game, 83.7 rushing yards per game, 303.1 passing yards per game, 38 touchdowns, and tied sixth in sacks allowed (40).

The Ottawa Redblacks drafted Bull in the first round (1st pick) of the 2023 CFL Draft. In 2023, he played nine games. Ottawa’ offense ranked sixth in average points (20.7), tied seventh in offensive touchdowns (33), ninth in total net offensive yards (318.8), second in average rushing yards (127.6), and ninth in average passing yards (220.4).

Collegiately, Bull played four seasons at Fresno State (2018-19, 2021-22) playing right tackle and left tackle in 37 games for the Bulldogs. In 2022, Fresno State averaged 30.57 points per game, 132.1 rushing yards per game, 270.57 passing yards per game, 402.6 total yards per game, 53 touchdowns, and allowed 39 sacks finishing 10-4 for the season beating Washington State in the LA Bowl.

Christian Albright is six foot one and weighs 239 pounds. The 26-year-old from Kennesaw, Georgia, made two tackles and one tackle on special teams in four games for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2024. He missed most of the season with a knee injury. The Ottawa Redblacks signed Albright on February 11, 2025.

The Chicago Bears signed Albright as an undrafted free agent on May 9, 2022. In 2022, he suffered an undisclosed injury and did not play in the preseason. The Bears released him on August 11, 2022.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed Albright on February 6, 2023. In 2023, he made four tackles, two tackles on special teams, three sacks, and one forced fumble in four games.

Collegiately, Albright played five seasons at Ball State (2017-21) making 260 tackles (132 solos, 128 assists), 34.5 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks, two interceptions for 10 yards, 13 pass breakups, nine forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and one touchdown in 57 games for the Cardinals. He was named Second Team All-MAC in 2020, Third Team All-MAC in 2018, and the Willie Snead True Cardinal Award winner in 2020.
