
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (23-12) and the Worcester Red Sox (18-16) played game two on Wednesday night from Coca-Cola Park. Kyle Tyler (3-2, 3.16 ERA) was on the mound for Lehigh Valley against Shane Drohan (3-0, 1.90 ERA) of Worcester.
At the top of the first inning, Worcester second baseman Marcelo Mayer hit an RBI triple to right field scoring Roman Anthony for a 1-0 lead. Next, Worcester shortstop Nick Sogard scored Mayer with a sacrifice fly to left field for a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, Lehigh Valley designated hitter Erick Brito hit an RBI double to right field scoring Oscar Mercado, and the IronPigs trailed the Red Sox 2-1. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Brito hit into a fielder’s choice scoring Payton Henry, and the game was tied 2-2. Brito went 1 for 4 with a double and one RBI.
Then, Lehigh Valley shortstop Rodolfo Castro hit José De León’s slider for a two-run home run at 401 feet to left field putting Lehigh Valley up 4-2. It was Castro’s second home run of the season. Castro went 1 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.
Worcester stormed back at the top of the eighth inning. Nick Sogard hit an RBI single to left field scoring Roman Anthony, and it was now 4-3 Lehigh Valley. Next, a sacrifice fly by Vaughn Grissom tied the game 4-4. Then, Yasmani Grandal hit a two-run RBI double to right field to give the Red Sox a 6-4 lead.
Lehigh Valley was unable to come back from this game and went on to lose to the Worcester Red Sox by the final score of 6-4. For the first time this season, the IronPigs have lost three straight games.
Lehigh Valley starter Kyle Tyler pitched seven innings, allowing four hits, two runs, one walk, and three strikeouts throwing 80 pitches, of which 54 were strikes in a no-decision. The loss went to Lehigh Valley relief pitcher Seth Johnson pitching 0.2 innings, allowing four hits, four runs, one walk, and one strikeout throwing 27 pitches, of which 17 were strikes.
It was Johnson’s second loss of the season. The win went to Worcester relief pitcher Luis Guerrero, and Isaiah Campbell earned his third save of the season.
