Jake Bates kicks a game-winning 42-yard field goal leading Michigan to victory

Michigan kicker Jake Bates made 5 field goals on Sunday including a game-winning 42-yarder against Arlington.

The Michigan Panthers (4-2) hosted the Arlington Renegades (0-6) on Sunday afternoon from Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, in front of a crowd of 7,428 fans.

A couple of late penalties by Arlington in the fourth quarter with under a minute left allowed Michigan to get set up on Arlington’s 24-yard line where Michigan kicker Jake Bates kicked the game-winning 42-yard field goal as the Panthers beat the Renegades by the final score of 28-27.

With the win, Michigan sits alone in second place in the USFL Conference, while Arlington remains winless in the UFL season.

Michigan had 275 yards on offense and were penalized 8 times for 63 yards. Quarterback Danny Etling completed 16 of 28 passes (57%) for 202 yards, one touchdown, and seven carries for 55 yards. Etling’s touchdown happened in the first quarter to wide receiver Siaosi Mariner for nine yards for a 7-0 lead with 11:38 left.

Running Matthew Colburn II had 8 carries for 24 yards, and one catch for five yards, while Wes Hills had 9 carries for 15 yards, one touchdown, and two catches for 14 yards. Hills touchdown happened in the fourth quarter for three yards making it 25-24 Michigan with 3:49 left in the game. The rushers finished the afternoon with 24 carries for 94 yards, and one touchdown.

Wide receiver Marcus Simms led the receivers making four catches for 67 yards, while Siaosi Mariner made four catches for 45 yards, and one touchdown. The receivers finished the afternoon making 16 catches for 202 yards, and one touchdown.

Michigan kicker Jake Bates made five field goals with a long of 60 yards. Michigan’s defense made 66 tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, three pass breakups, and one forced fumble.

Arlington had 291 yards on offense and were penalized 8 times for 76 yards. Quarterback Luis Perez completed 24 of 37 passes (65%) for 180 yards, and one touchdown. Perez’s touchdown happened in the second quarter to tight end Sal Cannella for 19 yards that gave them a 17-10 lead with 29 seconds left before halftime.

Running back De’Veon Smith led the rushers with 14 carries for 55 yards, while Dae Dae Hunter had four catches for 32 yards, one touchdown, and J.P. Payton had one carry for 14 yards, one touchdown, two catches for 38 yards.

Hunter’s touchdown happened in the second quarter for 12 yards making it 11-10 Arlington with 4:04 left, and Payton’s touchdown happened in the fourth quarter for 14 yards for a 24-16 lead with 12:52 left. Arlington’s rushers finished the day with 22 carries for 111 yards, and two touchdowns.

Tight End Sal Cannella led the receivers making six catches for 52 yards, and one touchdown. The receivers finished the afternoon making 24 catches for 180 yards, and one touchdown. Kicker Jonathan Garibay made two field goals with a long of 48 yards. Arlington’s defense made 66 tackles, five tackles for loss, three sacks, and two pass breakups.
