The Michigan Panthers released offensive lineman Obinna Eze on Tuesday to sign an NFL contract with the New York Jets and will be placed on the practice squad. On Tuesday, Eze worked out for the Jets.
Obinna Eze is six foot eight and weighs 325 pounds. The 25-year-old from Lagos, Nigeria, signed with the Panthers as a free agent on December 8, 2023. Before Michigan, the Detroit Lions signed Eze as an undrafted free agent in 2022.
Eze played in three preseason games for the Lions taking 77 snaps. In 2023, he played three preseason games before being released and later signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers and was placed on the practice squad.
Collegiately, Eze played four seasons at Memphis (2017-20) playing left tackle in 31 games for the Tigers. In 2020, he helped the Tigers rank 22nd in the nation in total offense (453.1) and finish 17th in the country in both passing offense (307.9) and first down offense (260). He was a two-time ACC All-Academic Team (2017, 2019).
Then, Eze transferred to TCU in 2021 playing 12 games at left tackle for the Horned Frogs. He made 37 consecutive starts between Memphis and TCU to close out his collegiate career. He was named a Big-12 Honorable Mention in 2021.
